Travel by Land

By Car:

The Coastal Virginia area is easy to navigate, but traffic can be unpredictable due to the timing and schedule of military operations. Roads are comprised of many bridge tunnels, including the famous Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. When traveling it the area, it is recommended that you have a toll pass. This can be obtained through the State of Virginia, from a rental car company, or from your home state. Your local toll pass will work in Virginia, and in most other states if traveling a long-distance, however, the pass must be opened for inter-operability at least 48 hours prior to departure. If using a toll pass from another state, it is best to call your state toll pass provider one week prior to departure to ensure that multi-state access is activated.

If traveling long-distance, timing can be important. When traveling from the Boston Area, the 10 hour trip provides the opportunity to explore many major attractions and cities along the East Coast. If timed incorrectly, however, you may hit congestion in Boston, Hartford, New York, and/or New Jersey as well as the effects of congestion near Philadelphia, D.C., and within Hampton Roads. While traveling during the evening is the most efficient, for those who cannot safely drive in the evening, it is recommended to plan your travel to arrive in Hartford directly after rush hour (9:30am) on weekdays.

By Train:

Amtrak provides service to Newport News from South Station via Washington Union Station. The trip is approximately 14 hours.
